Spill kits: what you really need when a drum tips over
An emergency plan for spills comes down to three steps: contain (socks), absorb (pads, rolls, granules), dispose (bags). The Fami spill kit has everything in one ready-to-use container, in two versions: for oil, paints and water (white, water-repellent absorbents that float) and for chemicals (yellow absorbents compatible with acids and bases). Prices start from around €85 for the kit; refills are bought separately.
Loose absorbents
Pads in packs of 100 for drips and cleaning at the machine; socks in packs of 8 to surround a leak and stop it before it reaches the drain; a 4000x500 mm roll to lay along decanting lines; 15 kg universal mineral granules for floors and large areas. Absorption capacity in litres is shown on the page of each item.
Prevention
Absorbents deal with the emergency; prevention means containment sumps under drums and flammables safety cabinets and chemical storage cabinets with sumps for cans. The kit should be placed in plain sight, near the storage area, with its contents checked at regular intervals.
Frequently asked questions
Oil kit or chemical kit?
The oil, paint and water kit is for hydrocarbons, lubricants, paints and non-aggressive liquids. The chemical kit uses absorbents compatible with acids, bases and aggressive solvents. A department with both risks needs both kits, identified by colour.
How many litres does a kit absorb?
The total absorption capacity of each kit and each refill pack is shown on the product page, in litres. The kit should be sized on the largest container that could tip over.
How are used absorbents disposed of?
Soaked absorbents are special waste, usually hazardous, to be disposed of through the company's authorised waste contractor under the EWC code corresponding to the liquid absorbed. The kit includes bags to collect them.
