Metal shelving: choosing shelves, load capacity and configuration

Metal shelving for workshops and light warehousing is assessed on three figures: load capacity per shelf, depth and usable height. Fami System ST shelving is galvanised, quick to assemble and has height-adjustable slotted shelves: dividers, separators and retaining strips fix onto the same shelves, so the shelving adapts to the material and not the other way round.

Shelving units

System ST shelving units have 5 or 6 shelves with a load capacity of 120 kg each, width 1000 or 2000 mm, depth from 300 to 800 mm and height 2000 mm. They are built from a starter bay and add-on bays that share the end frame, saving space and cost. With the dedicated brackets the shelves tilt from 5 to 30° to make the contents of the boxes visible. Prices start from around €205 for the 5-shelf unit.

Small parts and bin shelving

The small parts and bin shelving comes ready equipped with RK Box boxes, RK Box Air bins with dividers and front label strips, or Visual Box transparent drawers, from 8 to over 100 bins per shelving unit. It is the basis of a tidy fastener store and of a kitting station. Replacement bins are in the bins and boxescategory.

FIFO and LIFO flow racks

The FIFO and LIFO flow racks are designed for lean production: inclined shelves with a box stop edge to always pick the oldest container (FIFO, loaded from the rear and picked from the front) or the most accessible one (LIFO), or tilting frames, also on castors, to bring material closer to the line. Load capacity 100 kg per shelf, widths up to 2670 mm.

Tyre racks and accessories

The tyre racks have dedicated beams to store tyres upright without deforming them, with starter and add-on modules of 1000 and 2000 mm. In shelving components and accessories you will find slotted shelves, separator kits, trapezoidal dividers, internal drawers, RK Box runners and frames for wall fixing.

Shelving or cabinets?

Open shelving costs less and is quicker to load; it suits material that does not need protecting and is picked often. If the material needs to be locked away or protected from dust, the right choice is Perfom metal cabinets , which share the same slotted shelves and the same subdivision accessories as the shelving.
