Containment sump: sizing for drums and IBCs

The spill sump sits under the drums and collects whatever leaks. The rule normally used: capacity at least equal to the largest container and to 10% of the total stored. Fami sumps are made of blue painted steel, with combs and slats on which to rest the containers and fork pockets for moving them empty with a forklift: 200 litres for one drum (also tapered or with castors), 300 and 400 litres for two drums, 800 litres for four, 1000 litres for one IBC tank (also with frame), 1100 and 1200 litres for two IBCs with frames. Load capacity from 400 to 3000 kg. Prices start from around €300.

Accessories

The drum holder for 2 x 200-litre drums keeps them horizontal above the sump for dispensing; the frame raises the IBC tank to tap height. For small jerry cans and cans, you need flammables safety cabinets and chemical storage cabinets with an internal sump instead.

When a leak happens

The sump contains the leak, the absorbent removes it: spill kits and absorbents for oils or for chemicals should be kept next to the store. For solid waste and swarf, tipping skips and bins.

Frequently asked questions

Which sump for four 200-litre drums?

At least 200 litres according to the largest container rule, but in practice the 800-litre sump is chosen for four drums: it has the right footprint to hold them all and contains the entire contents of one. For two drums, the 300 or 400-litre sumps are suitable.

Are the sumps suitable for acids?

Painted steel sumps are for oils, solvents, flammables and degreasing water. Concentrated acids and bases require polyethylene sumps, which are not in the catalogue: contact us for a solution.

Can they be moved when full?

No. The fork pockets are for positioning the sump when empty; when full it must be emptied with a pump or absorbents before being moved. The 200-litre version with castors can be moved with a drum on it, on a level floor.
