Bench vice: which series for which job

A parallel vice is chosen by jaw width, material and type of use. The Work Go (100 and 150 mm jaw, from around €136) is compact, with welded pipe jaws and 2-hole base: suitable for maintenance and occasional work, also as a portable vice. The Work Strong (135 and 180 mm jaw, from around €209) is made entirely of forged steel, with 3-screw fixing, for heavy-duty workshop use. The Work Tech (100 and 120 mm jaw, from around €130) is forged and hardened, with a double trapezoidal thread for fast clamping and a 4-hole base with 10 mm holes: suited to straightening and pressing.

Fixed or with swivel base

The swivel base lets you turn the workpiece without removing it and costs €40 to €50 more; for the Work Go it is also available separately. All vices are fixed to the worktop with the dedicated screw kit, to be ordered at the same time.

On the right workbench

Vices perform best on a worktop that does not move: fixed workbenches with 40 mm beech worktop have the right thickness for direct fixing with through bolts. The Work Table folding workbench has a worktop pre-arranged for fixing one.

Frequently asked questions

Which jaw width should I choose?

100–120 mm for maintenance, electrical work and small workpieces; 135–150 mm for general workshop use; 180 mm for fabrication and large workpieces. A vice larger than necessary takes up worktop space and weighs up to 14 kg.

Do the vices have pipe jaws?

Work Go and Work Strong have pipe jaws as standard, below the main jaws. The Work Tech is a parallel vice for flat clamping, designed for straightening and pressing.

How is the vice fixed to the workbench?

With through bolts in the base holes (2, 3 or 4 depending on the series) and the screw kit for fixing to the worktop. On Fami workbenches with 40 mm beech worktop, fixing is direct; thin worktops need a backing plate.
